Parliament Approves 1st Batch Of Numerous Tax Waivers Previously Blocked By Finance Committee

Parliament has approved the first of numerous tax waivers before the House, which the Finance Committee was previously blocking.

MP for Obuasi West, Kwaku Kwarteng, who used to chair the Finance Committee, was accused of siding with the Minority in blocking tax waivers worth nearly $400 million.
However, barely a week after he was officially removed from the role, the first of several such tax waivers are now coming to the floor for approval.
The approved tax waiver amounts to 1.5 million for the supply and installation of e-learning laboratories in Senior High Schools across the country.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Vice Chair Of the Finance Committee, Carlos Ahenkora justified the need for the waivers.
The Minority surprisingly did not oppose the approval.
According to Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, this tax waiver is not controversial hence their support.
“Clearly this tax exemption is excepting a loan facility that has been approved by this house already amounting to 11.5 million. So the tax waiver is approximately 10% of what has been approved and the target is to supply some E-Learning equipment such as computers, laptops and a number of ICT-related equipment to certain secondary schools across the country,” the Minority Leader said.
He rather commended the Minister for ensuring the project was evenly distributed.
