A disturbing incident has been reported at Baifikrom, a suburb of Mankessim in the Central Region, where a grandmother has allegedly subjected her 9-year-old grandson to severe physical abuse.
According to reports, the suspect, a woman believed to be in her 40s and identified as Maame Kayah — popularly known within the community — allegedly assaulted the child after accusing him of tampering with and possibly damaging her radio set.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the situation escalated when the grandmother reportedly locked the boy in a room following the alleged assault and administered self-prescribed medication to him instead of seeking professional medical attention.
Residents who became aware of the incident are said to have attempted to rescue the child and send him to a nearby health facility for treatment. However, their efforts reportedly proved unsuccessful at the time due to resistance from the suspect.
The incident has sparked outrage and concern among community members, many of whom have called for swift intervention by child protection agencies and law enforcement authorities to safeguard the welfare of the minor.
Police at the Mankessim Division have since arrested the suspect to assist with investigations. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter as investigations continue.
