A young soldier has tragically lost his life in a fatal accident involving a vehicle belonging to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operational Support (NAIMOS) team at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred on Thursday when the NAIMOS officers were returning to base after a coordinated anti-galamsey operation in Obuasi and adjoining forest zones within the region. The team had reportedly wrapped up a routine field assignment before the accident happened.
Preliminary reports indicate that three other personnel — two police officers and one immigration officer — sustained severe injuries in the crash. The injured officers, all members of the joint NAIMOS taskforce, were rushed to the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Hospital in Obuasi, where they are currently receiving critical medical care.
Security sources say arrangements are being made to convey the body of the deceased soldier, who is yet to be formally identified, to Accra for further official procedures and subsequent family engagement.
Authorities are expected to launch a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
