The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has begun taking steps to pursue justice for victims of alleged human rights abuses in the Ada Songor enclave following a violent incident on October 21, 2021.

The victims, including traditional leaders, reportedly suffered police brutality, torture, and unlawful detention during a protest over the takeover of the Songor salt mining concession by Electrochem Ghana Limited. The clash also reportedly left one person dead, with the remains still at the morgue.

A CHRAJ delegation, led by Clement Kadogbe, Head of Business and Human Rights, visited the affected communities to engage victims and assure them of the Commission’s commitment to justice.

Speaking to Citi News on Friday, March 27, Mr Kadogbe said the visit was part of a field investigation to verify the claims firsthand.

“I received the petition sometime ago, alleging some brutalities or human rights violations that were meted out to people within the Ada enclave. We started our investigations, and today we came here to speak to the people on the ground, or to do what we call a field visit to ascertain for ourselves some of the issues contained in the complaint. We have heard from seven of the nine complainants, as well as from some witnesses, including chiefs and opinion leaders in Toflokpo,” he said.

Some victims who spoke to the media expressed appreciation to CHRAJ for taking steps to address their grievances and stressed the importance of ensuring accountability for the alleged abuses.

“I’m glad that today, at long last, CHRAJ is here, because justice should prevail. They tortured and molested me,” one victim said.
