Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has defended his decision to deploy Caleb Yirenkyi as a defender in the national team.
According to him, the player continues to play on the right flank of Ghana’s defense because there are very limited options.
There have been several calls for the youngster to be deployed in his natural role as a midfielder but the technical team of the Black Stars have not heeded to those calls.
Yirenkyi struggled at the back in Ghana’s 5-1 defeat to Austria on Friday evening but the Black Stars was quick to explain the decision to keep him there.
“In his club he has played as a defensive midfielder. We are having problems at that very position [right-back],” he said after the game.
“Caleb jumped into that position. We have a lot of midfielders and our problem is that side. Now we are happy to get Marvin; he’s new to the system so we have to see.
“At the moment, we didn’t have enough options at the right side and we have a lot of options in the midfield…that is why he [Yirenkyi] predominantly plays there.”
Otto Addo will be hoping Ghana can rediscover themselves when they take on Germany in three days.
