The Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly has confirmed that warnings were issued to residents not to use the building at the Newtown Experimental D/A School prior to its collapse.

This follows the collapse of a storey building at the Accra Newtown Experimental D/A School, resulting in the deaths of three people, with 20 others currently receiving treatment for severe injuries.

In an interview with Citi News, the Municipal Chief Executive for the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly, Rudolf Collingwoode-Williams, stated that the Assembly had been warning residents against the use of the facility for the past two weeks.

“We actually didn’t know that they were running a church service there until one day, one of the residents alerted me that this is what is happening here so quickly I sent my security to come and take them off the structure.

“So you know the normal black nature, they started raining insults and curses on them and I said whether insults or not, they had to move. If not for yesterday, I wouldn’t have known that they still operated in there.”

Responding to concerns about another storey building on the school compound that is reportedly nearing collapse, Collingwoode-Williams said engineers are currently assessing whether it should be demolished or reinforced.
