The Minority Caucus in Parliament has raised concerns over what it describes as questionable government spending priorities, alleging that significant public funds are being channelled into party structures while cocoa farmers struggle with worsening conditions.
The concerns were raised by the Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh in a Facebook post, amid ongoing engagements with cocoa farmers across the country as part of the Caucus’ nationwide tour of cocoa-growing communities.
According to him, the situation on the ground reveals deep distress among farmers, largely driven by reduced producer prices and delays in payments.
“As we continue our engagements with cocoa farmers across the country, one thing remains clear — our farmers are in distress, and government must act with urgency,” he stated.
He, however, questioned the government’s priorities, describing it as troubling that while farmers face economic hardship, public funds are reportedly being spent on political structures.
“It is deeply troubling that while cocoa farmers are struggling with reduced prices and delayed payments, significant public funds are reportedly being spent monthly on party structures. This raises serious questions about priorities,” he said.
The Minority is therefore urging the ruling National Democratic Congress to redirect resources toward critical sectors such as cocoa, which remains a backbone of the economy.
Annoh-Dompreh stressed the need for immediate intervention, including the restoration of fair producer prices and prompt payment to farmers, insisting that livelihoods must take precedence over politically driven expenditures.
“I strongly believe that the focus must shift immediately. The NDC Government must prioritize the cocoa sector by restoring fair producer prices and ensuring prompt payment to farmers. Redirecting resources to support livelihoods, rather than politically driven expenditures, is the only responsible path forward,” he added.
He further assured that the Minority would sustain its advocacy for cocoa farmers, insisting that the current situation demands urgent and decisive action.
“We will not relent. We will continue to stand with our farmers and fight for what is right until justice is restored,” he stressed.
