The Ghana Football Association has officially appointed Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision, taken by the GFA’s Executive Council in consultation with key stakeholders, signals a strategic move to bolster Ghana’s technical bench with vast international experience as the team prepares for the global showpiece set to be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Queiroz, a highly respected figure in world football, brings with him a rich coaching résumé spanning both club and international levels. He previously managed top sides including Real Madrid and served as assistant coach at Manchester United. On the international stage, he has handled teams such as Portugal national football team, Iran national football team, Egypt national football team, Oman national football team, Japan national football team, and Qatar national football team.

The veteran tactician boasts significant World Cup experience, having led South Africa national football team to qualification for the 2002 edition, guided Portugal to the Round of 16 in 2010, and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 tournaments.

His appointment is expected to inject tactical discipline, structure, and global expertise into the Black Stars setup as Ghana aims to make a strong impact on the world stage.

Queiroz is set to begin work immediately, focusing on squad assessment, tactical preparations, and fine-tuning the team ahead of the tournament, which kicks off on June 11, 2026.

Ghana will open its campaign against Panama national football team on June 17, 2026, in Toronto, before taking on England national football team and Croatia national football team in the remaining Group fixtures.
