The Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) has released the Agona West Constituency Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), David Essendoh, following his detention over allegations of false publication.
Essendoh was arrested after he reportedly shared a social media post claiming that “dumsor”—a widely used Ghanaian term describing intermittent power outages—had resurfaced. The post also included an image of a billboard bearing the President’s portrait alongside the referenced message, which authorities considered potentially misleading.
Arrest Sparks Political Concern
His arrest generated immediate concern within the NPP, with party officials questioning the circumstances and legality of his detention. According to party sources, initial efforts to locate him were unsuccessful, despite visits to the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters and National Security offices.
The uncertainty surrounding his whereabouts fuelled internal party calls for clarity and due process.
Detention at BNI Offices
It was later confirmed that Essendoh had been held at the BNI offices in Kawukudi, Accra, following his arrest. The detention was linked to ongoing investigations into the content and intent of the social media publication.
Authorities are said to have treated the matter as a potential case of false or misleading publication, although full details of the investigation have not been publicly disclosed.
Release on Bail Conditions
After engagements with relevant authorities and the fulfilment of bail requirements, David Essendoh was subsequently released from custody.
His release comes as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the post and its implications.
Security officials have indicated that the case remains active and will be reviewed as part of ongoing inquiries.
Background Context
The issue of “dumsor” remains a sensitive topic in Ghana’s political discourse, often resurfacing in public debate whenever concerns arise over power supply stability.
Social media posts referencing the phenomenon, especially when tied to political imagery or commentary, frequently attract public attention and scrutiny.
What Happens Next
Authorities are expected to continue examining the content of the post, including its intent, accuracy, and potential impact. No formal charges have yet been publicly announced beyond the initial allegation of false publication.
Meanwhile, the NPP is expected to monitor developments closely as the matter progresses.
