The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has urged Regional and Sector Commanders of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to strengthen collaboration, uphold professionalism, and enhance operational coordination to effectively address emerging migration and national security threats.
Speaking at the opening of the Ghana Immigration Service Regional Commanders’ Conference at the GIS Centre of Excellence in Odorkor, Accra, the Minister stressed that modern security challenges require stronger institutional partnerships, insisting that no security agency can effectively protect the country by operating in isolation.
He said improved command synergy is crucial to boosting operational efficiency, strengthening institutional discipline, promoting accountability, and ensuring the long-term growth and sustainability of the Ghana Immigration Service.
According to Mr. Muntaka, the conference theme, “Strengthening Command Synergy for Sustainable Growth,” is timely, given the growing security threats confronting Ghana and the West African sub-region. These include irregular migration, human trafficking, transnational organised crime, terrorism, and cyber-enabled criminal activities, all of which require coordinated and intelligence-driven responses.
The Interior Minister commended the Comptroller-General of Immigration and the GIS management for prioritising the welfare of officers through improved logistics, expanded infrastructure, and better working conditions. He described these initiatives as essential to building a highly motivated, disciplined, and operationally effective workforce capable of securing Ghana’s borders.
He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to equipping the Ghana Immigration Service with the resources needed to strengthen border security, improve surveillance capabilities, and enhance the Service’s overall operational capacity.
Mr. Muntaka also praised officers and personnel of the Service for their dedication, professionalism, and sacrifices in safeguarding Ghana’s territorial integrity and contributing to national peace, stability, and development.
He further encouraged Regional and Sector Commanders to lead with integrity, fairness, discipline, and accountability while using the three-day conference as a platform to exchange ideas, share experiences, and develop practical strategies to improve the Service’s operational effectiveness and leadership capacity.
The conference will feature presentations on strategic leadership, command and control, strategic management and finance, disciplinary procedures under Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2245, and 360-degree leadership, all aimed at strengthening leadership and institutional performance within the Service.
In his welcome address, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Samuel Basintale Amadu, emphasised that discipline remains the cornerstone of the Service’s success. He noted that Regional and Sector Commanders play a pivotal role in protecting Ghana’s borders, maintaining immigration integrity, and reinforcing the country’s national security architecture.
The conference is expected to reinforce strategic coordination among immigration commanders and enhance the Ghana Immigration Service’s readiness to respond to evolving security threats while supporting national development and regional stability.
