Accra High Court Grants GH¢100,000 Bail to NPP’s Abronye DC

The Accra High Court has granted bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 to Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, who serves as the Bono Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The court, presided over on Thursday, May 21, 2026, admitted Abronye DC to bail with two sureties after hearing arguments from his legal representatives challenging an earlier remand order issued by Circuit Court 9 in Accra.

Abronye DC had been remanded into custody by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) over allegations of spreading false news, a development that sparked widespread political debate and public reaction across the country.

His lawyers subsequently filed a motion at the High Court, arguing that the continued detention of the outspoken politician was excessive and unjustified, insisting that he was entitled to bail while investigations continued.

The case gained further national attention following Abronye DC’s rearrest shortly after he had earlier secured bail during the ongoing investigations.

Ahead of the High Court ruling, the New Patriotic Party criticised the handling of the bail process, particularly the reassignment of the case from Criminal Court Two to General Jurisdiction Two in Accra.

According to the party, the transfer was “mind-boggling” and appeared to be a calculated move aimed at frustrating efforts to secure bail for the NPP regional chairman.

Party officials also expressed concern over what they described as growing political intimidation and harassment of opposition figures under the current administration, warning that such actions could undermine democratic freedoms and public confidence in the justice system.

The High Court’s decision to grant bail is expected to ease tensions among supporters of Abronye DC and the opposition party, while the substantive case continues before the courts.
