AFCON 2023: Ronwen Williams Saves Twice As South Africa Beat DR Congo On Penalties To Claim Bronze

Ronwen Williams once again was the hero for South Africa as they beat DR Congo on penalties to finish third at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Williams made two stops during the penalty shootout as Bafana Bafana claimed a 6-5 victory after a goalless game in regulation time.
First, DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba had an opportunity to win, but Williams stopped it, and Meshack Elia’s penalty was also saved.
After 90 minutes of play, the game was decided on penalties.
Williams saved four penalties in the shootout during the quarterfinal win over Cape Verde.
In Abidjan’s Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, he again proved crucial when Tebogo Mokoena, who has been a significant player in South Africa’s success in Ivory Coast, missed the first penalty.
However, the goalkeeper came up big once again to ensure South Africa return home with the bronze medal.
The third-place finish also becomes Bafana Bafana’s best performance at the AFCON since 2000 where they also finished third after losing to Nigeria in the semifinal.
