Affirmative Action And Equity Act Is Timely, Says Gender Minister

The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Darkoa Newman, has expressed optimism about the passage of the Affirmative Action and Equity Act, describing it as timely and crucial for advancing gender equality in Ghana.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Ministry of Information in Accra, Madam Newman clarified that the Act is not meant to grant women undue privileges but rather to shield them from vulnerabilities and ensure fair opportunities.
Madam Newman, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South, commended President Nana Akufo-Addo and the male Members of Parliament for their steadfast support in passing the bill.
She noted that their collective efforts have successfully brought the legislation to this stage, with only the President’s signature remaining for it to become law.
The Minister emphasised that women in Ghana possess the qualifications and capabilities to occupy leadership positions.
She believes that the Affirmative Action and Equity Act will provide a much-needed platform for women to access equal opportunities in such roles, fostering a more inclusive and balanced leadership landscape.
Additionally, the Okaikwei South MP pointed out that the Act includes punitive measures for those who fail to comply with its provisions.
However, she also highlighted the significant incentives available for companies and individuals who actively recruit women into decision-making positions, encouraging broad support for the initiative.
Madam Newman reiterated her commitment to promoting gender equality in Ghana, urging all stakeholders to embrace the Affirmative Action and Equity Act as a vital step towards empowering women and ensuring their representation in leadership across the nation.
