A former First Vice Chairman of the Mfantseman Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Yaw Berchie-Nuako—popularly known as “Wofa Yaw or Old Soldier”—has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of Constituency Chairman.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Obrumankoma FM 100.7MHz with host Paa Solo Savvy on Friday, April 24, 2026, and monitored by NewsAfricaGhana.com, Wofa Yaw disclosed that his decision was influenced by persistent appeals from grassroots supporters and party faithful, who believe his leadership is vital at this critical moment for the party.

He stressed that he is stepping forward with renewed energy, experience, and a clear strategic vision to reposition the NPP and restore its electoral dominance in the Mfantseman Constituency.

In an emotional segment of the interview, Wofa Yaw struggled to hold back tears when reflecting on the party’s loss of over 12,000 votes in the previous election, despite having incumbent Member of Parliament, Ophelia Mensah Hayford, on the ticket. He described the defeat as both painful and instructive, calling it a wake-up call for the party to reconnect with its grassroots base and rebuild internal cohesion.

Outlining his vision for the constituency, the former vice chairman emphasized unity, grassroots mobilization, and discipline within party ranks as the cornerstone of his leadership approach. He pledged to work closely with constituency executives, polling station officers, and party supporters to rebuild trust and strengthen the party’s structures ahead of future elections.

Old Soldier further assured delegates and party members of an inclusive leadership style that prioritizes collaboration, accountability, and results-driven strategies. He noted that his ultimate goal is to spearhead efforts to recapture the Mfantseman parliamentary seat for the NPP and restore confidence among supporters.

His declaration is expected to heighten competition for the constituency chairmanship position, as the party begins internal reorganization and prepares for upcoming political contests.
