Asiedu Nketiah Sworn in as Board Chairman of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has been formally sworn in as the new Board Chairman of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), in a move expected to bring seasoned political leadership and strategic oversight to one of the country’s most vital state institutions.

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, and was attended by key stakeholders from the maritime sector, senior government officials, and representatives of allied agencies. Also sworn in was Professor Ransford Edward Van Gyampo, a renowned political science lecturer and Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, who joins the newly reconstituted GPHA Board as a member.

The reconstitution of the GPHA Board is part of a broader government initiative to revamp the leadership of strategic state institutions, strengthen governance frameworks, and align the operations of public sector agencies with the country’s development agenda.

In his address after taking the oath of office, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in his new capacity and pledged to work closely with board members and management to deliver on the Authority’s mandate. He emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and innovation in achieving operational excellence at Ghana’s ports.

“The GPHA remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic development. Our task as a board is to provide the strategic leadership and direction necessary to ensure our ports are globally competitive, secure, and efficient,” he said.

Transport Minister, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, who oversaw the ceremony, noted that the government’s vision is to transform Ghana into a leading maritime trade and logistics hub within the West African sub-region. He charged the new board to pursue policies that would enhance revenue mobilisation, improve port infrastructure, and deepen collaboration with international shipping partners.

The newly inaugurated board is expected to drive major initiatives, including the expansion of the Tema and Takoradi ports, the digitisation of port operations, the promotion of public-private partnerships, and the streamlining of port clearance processes to reduce turnaround times.

With international trade accounting for a significant share of Ghana’s GDP, the GPHA plays a critical role in the country’s economic performance. The new leadership under Mr. Asiedu Nketiah is expected to bring both political clout and administrative experience to bear in pushing reforms that will improve service delivery and enhance Ghana’s attractiveness as a maritime destination.

The government and industry watchers are optimistic that the reconstituted board will deliver on its mandate and position Ghana’s ports as key facilitators of economic growth, regional trade integration, and global commerce.
