Voting has officially ended in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ayawaso East parliamentary primary, with the sorting and counting of ballots currently underway at the Nima Cluster of Schools.
The internal election, organised to select the party’s candidate for the March 3, 2026, by-election, saw over 1,100 accredited delegates expected to cast their ballots.
Polling commenced at exactly 9:00 a.m. and closed at 4:00 p.m., in line with party regulations. Shortly after the close of polls, electoral officers began the sorting and counting of votes under the watchful eyes of party agents, aspirants’ representatives, and observers. Results are expected to be announced later today.
Five aspirants are contesting for the party’s ticket in what has been described as a keenly contested primary. They are Mohammed Ramne, the Constituency Chairman; Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament; Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria; Dr Yakubu Azindow, a Political Scientist; and Najib Mohammed Sani.
The primary was necessitated by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Naser Toure, creating a vacancy ahead of the upcoming by-election.
Security has been tightened at the venue, with a strong police presence deployed to maintain law and order as delegates and supporters remain on site to monitor the process.
The Ayawaso East seat is widely regarded as a traditional stronghold of the NDC, making the outcome of the primary particularly significant. The eventual winner is expected to emerge as the frontrunner in the by-election.
Meanwhile, all five aspirants have expressed confidence in their chances, as supporters eagerly await the declaration of results.
