Chief of Wassa Ateiku Appeals to Minister for Intervention in Prolonged Chieftaincy Disputes

The Chief of Wassa Ateiku in the Western Region, Nana Ogyeadie Kwaku Gyabeng II, has appealed to the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim to intervene in the ongoing chieftaincy disputes that have hindered development in the area.

Speaking in an interview with Agyei Kwaku Mensah, Nana Gyabeng II lamented that the prolonged conflicts over chieftaincy have brought developmental efforts in the community to a standstill. He explained that upon ascending the throne, he spearheaded several initiatives, including the establishment of Wassaman FM and other key community development projects. However, progress has since stalled due to the disputes.

He noted that his predecessor and uncle ruled peacefully for over four decades—42 years—without any chieftaincy-related issues. In contrast, his reign has been plagued by legal challenges and unrest.

“The matter has gone as far as the High Court in Tarkwa and even the Appeals Court in Accra. Yet, a divisional chief remains dissatisfied with the rulings, which continues to fuel tension in the community,” Nana Gyabeng II stated.

He emphasized that the lack of resolution is not only affecting governance at the local level but is also impeding peace and economic progress.

Adding her voice, the Queen Mother of Ateiku, Nana Ekua Anaa II, also called on the Ministry, as well as the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs, to step in urgently. She expressed deep concern about the deterioration of peace in the community.

“Ateiku was once known for its peaceful environment, but due to these chieftaincy conflicts, the area has become unstable. This is seriously affecting both the economic life and the general development of our people,” she noted.

Both leaders stressed that without timely intervention from the appropriate authorities, the area risks further decline in community welfare and development.
