EOCO, NIB Launches Investigations Into Ken Ofori-Atta’s Financial Conduct

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is under intensified scrutiny, as both the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) have reportedly launched parallel investigations into his financial activities during his time in office.

Sources indicate that the two state agencies have declared Mr. Ofori-Atta a person of interest, as they probe alleged irregularities linked to his management of the country’s finances. The investigations mark a significant development in ongoing efforts to hold former public officials accountable.

This development comes amid intensified efforts by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to compel former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to respond to allegations of corruption and corruption-related offenses during his tenure.

In an exclusive interview with JoyNews, Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai confirmed that the government has initiated formal processes to extradite Mr. Ofori-Atta, who is currently believed to be outside the country.

“Arrests can take different forms. You may arrest someone temporarily, but a formal extradition process must follow,” he explained.

Justice Srem-Sai further noted that being listed on a Red Notice does not automatically result in extradition unless supported by a valid warrant and formal request.

“The Office of the Attorney General is coordinating efforts with foreign governments to facilitate his return to Ghana,” he said. “We are currently in the process of taking the necessary legal steps to have him extradited.”

He clarified that, for the extradition to proceed, the offenses for which Mr. Ofori-Atta is being investigated must also be recognized as crimes in the jurisdiction where he is located.

“We submit a formal application to the relevant law enforcement agency in that country. Once received, they will place him under arrest and initiate extradition proceedings,” he added.

Justice Srem-Sai also revealed that Ghanaian authorities are working closely with law enforcement in the United States to locate Mr. Ofori-Atta, although other jurisdictions remain under consideration depending on his actual whereabouts.

Upon his return to Ghana, Mr. Ofori-Atta will be arrested, formally cautioned, and charged. The legal process will then move forward with possible bail proceedings and trial.

The former minister was earlier declared wanted by the OSP after months of unsuccessful attempts to secure his appearance for questioning. With EOCO and the NIB now actively involved, pressure on Mr. Ofori-Atta has significantly intensified.
