Residents of Ewoyaa in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region are calling for compensation to be paid within two months following Parliament’s ratification of the lithium mining agreement.
The residents, particularly those whose properties have been affected by the project, say that while they are pleased with the approval of the deal, their immediate concern is the prompt payment of compensation.
After nearly three years of delay, Parliament on Thursday, March 19, 2026, approved the agreement, granting Barari DV Limited a large-scale commercial mining lease to operate in Ewoyaa and surrounding communities.
Under the revised agreement, Ghana’s royalty earnings will be determined by global lithium prices through a sliding-scale mechanism.
Speaking to Citi News, Secretary of the Concerned Ewoyaa Lithium Affected People, Frank Acquah, said the community expects compensation to be settled within two months of the ratification.
“Now that the lease has been ratified, compensation should be the next priority. The company must fast-track the process so we can be paid as soon as possible—it should not go beyond two months,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Mfantseman, Dr. Prince Arhin, has assured residents that compensation payments will not be delayed this time. He also encouraged the youth in the area to take advantage of job opportunities expected to come with the project.
