GAF Fulfills Promise to Soldier Who Rejected Galamsey Bribe, Deploys Him to UN Peacekeeping Mission

As part of a reward package announced in July this year by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, L/Cpl. Teye-Tsu has officially been deployed to serve with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
He departed Ghana last week as part of the Ghanaian Battalion 92 (GHANBATT 92), after undergoing a five-week intensive pre-deployment training at the Army Peace Operations Training School (APOTS), located at the Battle Training Camp, Bundase.
From Bribe Rejection to International Duty
L/Cpl. Teye-Tsu first drew national attention in late 2024 when, while on guard duty at the Bibiani Gold Mines, a group of artisanal miners attempted to bribe him with a significant amount of money in order to gain access to their illegal mining pits. Rather than compromise, he refused the money, apprehended the suspects, and handed them over for prosecution.
His action, described by many as a rare show of patriotism, earned him admiration from the military hierarchy, his colleagues, and Ojeyz Security Limited—the private firm responsible for safeguarding the mine.
Recognition and Promotion
In recognition of his exemplary conduct, the GAF held an all-rank durbar at Burma Hall, Burma Camp, on July 11, 2025. At the ceremony, then-Private Teye-Tsu was promoted to Lance Corporal, presented with a citation, and nominated for peacekeeping duties under the UN.
The late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, also publicly lauded his courage, promising him a GHC 10,000 incentive. Sadly, Dr. Boamah passed away, along with seven others, in a helicopter crash before he could fulfil the pledge.
Background
L/Cpl. Teye-Tsu, 30, enlisted in the Ghana Armed Forces in 2023. He hails from Odumase-Krobo in the Eastern Region and is an alumnus of Manya Krobo Senior High School and King David College, both in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality. Outside of his military duties, he is also active in the Krobo-based youth advocacy network, Kloma Gbi (Voice of the Krobo States).
His deployment to Lebanon marks a new chapter in a military career that has already distinguished him as a symbol of discipline, integrity, and patriotism—qualities many Ghanaians believe are crucial in the fight against corruption and illegal mining.
