A tragic incident has rocked Ghana’s football community following the fatal shooting of Dominic Frimpong, a young player for Berekum Chelsea, after armed attackers ambushed the club’s team bus.

According to reports, the team was returning from a Ghana Premier League match against Samartex in Samreboi when the incident occurred on Sunday. The game had ended in a 1-0 defeat for Berekum Chelsea, and the squad was travelling back to Berekum—approximately 270 kilometres away—when they came under attack.

Ambush on the Highway

The club revealed that six masked men, armed with guns and assault rifles, blocked the road and opened fire on the team bus. In a desperate attempt to escape, the driver tried to reverse the vehicle as shots rang out.

“They started shooting at our bus as the driver attempted to reverse. Players and staff fled into nearby bushes to seek cover,” the club said in a statement.

At the time of the нападение, about 30 players and officials were on board.

Frimpong Succumbs to Injuries

Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds during the attack and was rushed to a medical facility, where he later died while receiving treatment. The 20-year-old forward had recently joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC in January and had scored two goals in 13 appearances this season.

Police Launch Manhunt

The Ghana Police Service has since launched a full-scale manhunt for the attackers. Authorities confirmed that additional personnel and crime scene experts have been deployed to the area, assuring the public that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

Football Authorities React

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed “profound shock and deep sorrow” over Frimpong’s death, describing him as a promising talent whose passion reflected the spirit of the domestic league.

The league body also reiterated its support for Berekum Chelsea and called for urgent action to improve security for clubs travelling across the country.

Growing Safety Concerns

Sunday’s нападение has reignited concerns over safety on Ghana’s highways, particularly for sports teams. Several clubs—including Legon Cities FC and AshantiGold SC—have reportedly experienced similar attacks in recent years.

Sports journalist Muftawu Abdulai described the national mood as one of “shock and disappointment,” noting that many are questioning whether it is safe for teams to travel for league matches.

Calls for Action

In response, the GFA says it is reviewing and strengthening security arrangements for clubs to prevent future tragedies. The incident has intensified calls for coordinated action between football authorities and security agencies to ensure the safety of players, officials, and fans.

Frimpong’s death marks a devastating loss not only for his club but for Ghanaian football as a whole, cutting short the life of a young player widely regarded as one of the game’s rising prospects.
