Government Urged to Provide Storage Facilities to Reduce Post-Harvest Losses

The 2020 Best Farmer of the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District, Mr. Isaac Agyiri, popularly known as Showbouy, has appealed to government to construct adequate storage facilities to preserve farm produce during harvest seasons.

According to him, every food crop has its season, and without proper storage, a large portion of the produce goes to waste. He stressed that if government intervenes by purchasing surplus food during the peak seasons and storing them in modern facilities, the country would have access to farm products all year round while also reducing post-harvest losses.

Mr. Agyiri made the call when he led pupils of the Twifo Nsuem D/A Basic School to establish a school farm. The initiative has enabled the school to cultivate a variety of vegetables, which are being used to generate income and supplement the feeding of students.

He noted that the lack of storage facilities remains a major challenge to farmers across the country, as bumper harvests often lead to glut and wastage. “If storage facilities are available, farmers will be encouraged to produce more, knowing that their hard work will not go to waste,” he said.

Mr. Agyiri further called on government to extend support to individuals and community groups who are making efforts to grow crops in their localities. He emphasized that such support would not only empower farmers but also contribute significantly to food security and the overall development of the nation.
