The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured Parliament that the government will commence the recruitment of the 2022 batch of nurses and midwives before the end of 2026 as part of a phased plan to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare workforce.
Addressing Parliament, the Minister said the ongoing recruitment exercise is currently focused on the 2021 batch of nurses and midwives, with successful applicants already reporting to their assigned duty stations nationwide.
According to Mr Akandoh, the phased recruitment strategy is aimed at addressing critical staffing shortages in health facilities and improving access to quality healthcare, particularly in underserved communities.
He disclosed that recruitment for the 2022 batch will begin before the close of 2026, while the 2023 batch will be considered afterwards, subject to the Ministry of Finance granting the necessary financial clearance.
The Health Minister further revealed that 16,000 health professionals are being recruited this year to strengthen the country’s health sector and enhance service delivery.
Responding to questions from Members of Parliament on the floor of the House, Mr Akandoh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the gradual recruitment of qualified health professionals in line with available financial resources and the staffing requirements of health facilities across the country.
He stressed that the Ministry of Health remains committed to ensuring that Ghana’s healthcare system is adequately staffed to meet the growing health needs of the population while maintaining fiscal discipline.
