“I Don’t Know What You Call Rich” – Bryan Acheampong on Support for Wontumi’s GH¢50 Million Bail [VIDEO]

Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has confirmed his involvement in efforts to secure bail for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Dr. Acheampong, a former Minister of State and a leading figure expected to contest the NPP’s 2028 presidential primaries, disclosed that he has offered properties to support the bail process. He downplayed suggestions that this act reflects wealth.

“We’ve just completed the inspection of the properties. The next step is for the officials to verify their value to determine if they meet the bail conditions,” he explained.

Asked about the value of his contribution, Dr. Acheampong remarked, “I don’t know what you call rich,” suggesting that the gesture was not extraordinary.

Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi has withdrawn a motion filed at the High Court in Accra on 30 May 2025 seeking a review of his bail conditions. The motion, which was scheduled to be heard on Tuesday, 3 June, was formally withdrawn by his legal team on Monday, 2 June.

The NPP regional chairman had earlier challenged the GH¢50 million bail set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), arguing through his lawyers that the amount was excessive and aimed at frustrating his release.

According to Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, Wontumi is under investigation for serious criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, money laundering, and alleged involvement in international organised crime.
