Kejetia Market Clash: Traders Battle KMA Task Force Over Decongestion Exercise

Tensions escalated at the Kejetia Market in Kumasi as traders engaged in a heated confrontation with a task force from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) during an ongoing decongestion exercise.

The operation, initiated by city authorities to restore order and ease congestion within the bustling commercial hub, was met with strong resistance from sections of traders. Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as enforcement officers attempted to remove unauthorised sellers operating outside designated trading areas, triggering scuffles and disruptions across parts of the market.

In recent months, the Kejetia Market has come under increasing scrutiny, with the Federation of Kumasi Traders raising alarm over severe overcrowding. The group estimates that the facility is currently hosting more than 3,300 traders beyond its intended capacity—an issue they warn poses serious safety risks.

Traders have also expressed concern about alleged structural defects within the facility, describing the situation as a potential “death trap” if urgent interventions are not made. These concerns have heightened anxiety among market users, particularly amid the growing pressure on space and infrastructure.

However, KMA officials insist the decongestion exercise is both necessary and timely. According to the Assembly, the operation is aimed at improving accessibility, ensuring public safety, and restoring order within the market enclave.
Despite these assurances, many traders remain defiant, arguing that the exercise threatens their livelihoods. The standoff quickly intensified as traders resisted eviction attempts, leading to confrontations that temporarily disrupted trading activities and drew significant public attention.

Authorities are yet to indicate whether additional measures will be introduced to address both the congestion concerns and the grievances of affected traders, as tensions remain high within one of Kumasi’s busiest commercial centres.
