Two students from the College of Engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have earned a GH¢5,000 cash prize after an impressive performance at the maiden Tertiary Edition of the Gas Challenge.

Emmanuel Ababio and Abena Owusua Yeboah secured the award after guiding KNUST to a second-place finish in the national competition organised by the Ghana National Gas Company Limited (GNGC).

The duo, selected for their strong grasp of gas and petroleum engineering concepts, competed against top universities in a contest that tested knowledge in natural gas processing, the gas value chain, health and safety, and the economic impact of Ghana’s gas industry.

KNUST advanced to the grand finale after emerging winners at the zonal stage, outperforming several institutions offering petroleum-related programmes across the country.

At the final held in Accra, the KNUST team delivered a dominant showing, leading through four of the five rounds before narrowly missing out on the top spot. They finished with 80 points, behind University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), which scored 91 points, while the University of Ghana placed third with 64 points.

For their performance, the team received a GH¢5,000 cash prize, laptops for each contestant, as well as a citation and plaque. The College of Engineering also honoured the students with Certificates of Appreciation in recognition of their achievement.

The competition, attended by key stakeholders including the Chief Executive Officer of GNGC, Dr. Ben K.D. Asante, and representatives from the Ministries of Energy, Education and Information, brought together nine universities in its maiden tertiary edition.

The Gas Challenge, introduced in 2019, continues to serve as a platform to promote academic excellence and strengthen the link between academia and Ghana’s growing energy sector.
