Lawyer for TikToker Challenges ‘Onerous’ GH¢1m Bail Conditions

Nana Agyei Bafour Awuah, lawyer for 26-year-old TikToker Akosua Serwaa Minat, has described the GH¢1 million bail granted to his client as excessive, arguing that the accompanying conditions are overly stringent and currently under legal review.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, May 22, Mr. Bafour Awuah said the defence team was dissatisfied with the bail conditions, insisting they place an unfair burden on the accused as they consider their next course of action.

He explained that during proceedings, the charges against the TikToker were read in court, with prosecutors alleging that she issued death threats against President John Dramani Mahama through viral social media videos.

According to him, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges, while the prosecution strongly opposed her application for bail.

“The state fiercely opposed the grant of bail, but the judge, taking into account the arguments that had been made, decided to grant her bail. Except that the bail condition was too onerous, and so we are reviewing our next step,” he said.

Despite the prosecution’s opposition, the court granted bail but imposed conditions the defence considers harsh, including a GH¢1 million bond with two sureties, one of whom must be a civil servant earning not less than GH¢5,000 monthly.

As part of the bail terms, the court also ordered the accused to surrender either her passport or Ghana Card to the police and report regularly to investigators throughout the duration of the case.

The accused, identified by police as Mahama Aminat and popularly known on TikTok as Akosua Serwaa Minat, was arrested by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) following the circulation of viral videos allegedly containing threatening remarks directed at the President.
