“Mahama Administration Misled Public to Gain Power – Aboagye Reacts to Energy Levy”

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has launched a blistering critique of the Mahama-led administration following the introduction of the controversial Dumsor Levy, accusing the government of deceiving Ghanaians to win power.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, June 7, Aboagye described the levy as a betrayal of public trust and condemned the current leadership as incompetent and dishonest.
“It is a betrayal of trust. The situation we find ourselves in is the result of a clueless, eternally incompetent bunch of arrogant braggarts who have simply scammed their way into government,” he said in response to the recently passed Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
The bill imposes a GH¢1 per litre charge on petroleum products, intended to raise revenue to support the heavily indebted energy sector.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson defended the measure in Parliament, disclosing that Ghana’s energy sector debt stood at US$3.1 billion as of March 2025. He said the government requires at least US$3.7 billion to settle the debt and an additional US$1.2 billion to finance fuel for thermal power generation throughout the year.
Despite the government’s justification, the Minority has slammed the levy as a “predatory tax,” warning that it could extract up to GH¢5.7 billion annually from households and businesses. They argue that the bill was pushed through Parliament without adequate transparency or stakeholder engagement, and have called for full accountability in the management of the funds.
