President John Dramani Mahama has officially nominated the Member of Parliament for Builsa North, James Agalga, to serve as Acting Majority Leader of Parliament.
The nomination was formally communicated to the House on Monday, August 24, 2026, during an emergency sitting of Parliament following the President’s recall of the House to consider urgent government business.
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin read a letter from President Mahama conveying the nomination to Members of Parliament, formally placing the development before the House.
The nomination of Mr. Agalga comes as Parliament begins a five-day emergency sitting scheduled to run from Monday, August 24 to Friday, August 28. The special sitting has been convened to deal with a number of urgent matters outlined by the President.
Among the key items expected to come before Parliament are the consideration of the nominations of three persons to the Supreme Court, two ministerial nominees, as well as the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions Amendment Bill.
The emergency sitting is also expected to focus on other matters specifically outlined in the President’s communication recalling Parliament.
Speaker Alban Bagbin has directed Members of Parliament to restrict proceedings during the emergency session to the specific matters for which the House was recalled. He indicated that no other business would be admitted during the five-day sitting.
Mr. Agalga, who represents the Builsa North Constituency in the Upper East Region, now assumes the role of Acting Majority Leader at a crucial time as Parliament undertakes the President’s urgent legislative and constitutional business.
The nomination is expected to guide the Majority side’s activities during the emergency sitting and ensure the smooth coordination of parliamentary business throughout the period.
