The Mankessim Slaughterhouse has been left in a deplorable condition as operations continue to be hampered by an acute shortage of water.
Workers at the facility have expressed deep dissatisfaction with the situation, lamenting that the lack of potable water has made their work increasingly difficult and unhygienic. According to them, the shortage is not only affecting the cleanliness of the slaughterhouse but also raising serious concerns about public health and food safety.
They explained that water is essential for maintaining sanitary conditions during the slaughtering and processing of animals. Without a reliable supply, cleaning the facility, equipment, and animal carcasses becomes nearly impossible, exposing consumers to potential health risks.
The workers are therefore appealing to the authorities, particularly the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly and the relevant stakeholders, to intervene urgently. They stressed that if immediate steps are not taken to restore a consistent water supply, the slaughterhouse risks closure, which would have a direct impact on local butchers, meat traders, and the broader community that depends on the facility for fresh meat.
Some workers also called for long-term investment in the facility, including proper infrastructure, drainage systems, and storage facilities, to ensure that such challenges do not reoccur in the future.
