Mfantseman: 85 LEAP Beneficiaries Receive Cash and Business Equipment to Boost Livelihoods

A total of 85 beneficiaries under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme in the Mfantseman Municipality have received cash grants and livelihood support items from the Department of Social Welfare as part of the government’s efforts to improve the socio-economic well-being of persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The presentation ceremony took place on Monday, July 27, 2026, at Saltpond, the municipal capital, where beneficiaries expressed excitement and gratitude after receiving various forms of support aimed at helping them establish or expand their businesses and improve their standard of living.

Addressing the beneficiaries, the Director of the Mfantseman Department of Social Welfare, Madam Abena Serwaa Opare, congratulated the recipients and urged them to make prudent use of the support provided. She stressed that the intervention was intended to empower them economically rather than serve as temporary relief.

Madam Opare explained that the department would closely monitor all beneficiaries to ensure that the items and financial support are used for their intended purposes. According to her, beneficiaries who fail to utilise the assistance productively risk being removed from future support programmes, while those who demonstrate commitment and business growth could qualify for additional assistance to expand their enterprises.

She encouraged the beneficiaries to remain hardworking and responsible, adding that the success of the programme depends largely on their dedication to making good use of the resources entrusted to them.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Mfantseman, Hon. Eric Stanley Acquah (Mfantseman KK), commended President John Dramani Mahama for the government’s continued commitment to improving the lives of persons with disabilities through targeted social intervention programmes.

He noted that the law requires that at least five per cent of the District Assemblies Common Fund be allocated to support persons with disabilities, describing the initiative as a critical step towards promoting economic inclusion and self-reliance.

Hon. Acquah further disclosed that the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly has established a monitoring team that will regularly assess how beneficiaries are utilising the cash and equipment received. He emphasised that the Assembly is determined to ensure that the resources achieve their intended purpose of creating sustainable livelihoods.

The MCE advised beneficiaries to invest the support wisely, improve their businesses and living conditions, and position themselves to benefit from future government interventions.

Out of the 85 beneficiaries, 49 received cash grants, while 36 were presented with business equipment and working tools tailored to their vocational needs.

The items distributed included:

• 20 deep freezers
• 4 fufu machines
• 1 vegetable processing machine
• 1 camera printer
• 1 Epson printer
• 5 laptop computers
• 1 foot sewing machine
• 2 knitting machine
• 1 industrial sewing machine

Several beneficiaries who spoke to News Africa Ghana expressed appreciation to the government, the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly and the Department of Social Welfare for the timely intervention. They pledged to put the support to good use by expanding their businesses, becoming financially independent and improving the welfare of their families.

The presentation forms part of government efforts to promote economic empowerment, reduce poverty and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for vulnerable persons across the country.
