The Member of Parliament (MP) for Mfantseman, Hon. Dr. Ebenezer Prince Kojo Arhin, has called on Atlantic Lithium to expedite the payment of compensation to landowners affected by the company’s activities.
The MP made the appeal while addressing traditional leaders, known locally as Nananom, and other attendees at the Anomabo Okyir Festival over the weekend.
Hon. Dr. Arhin expressed concern over the delay in compensating the affected landowners, describing the situation as painful, particularly as the affected individuals and communities have reportedly waited for more than two years without receiving their due payments, despite Parliament having ratified the agreement.
He stressed the need for Atlantic Lithium to treat the matter with urgency and take the necessary steps to ensure that the affected landowners receive their compensation without further delays.
The Mfantseman MP noted that prolonged delays in compensation payments could cause hardship for the affected landowners, who deserve to be treated fairly and have their concerns addressed.
He therefore urged the company to engage the relevant stakeholders and traditional authorities to resolve any outstanding issues and facilitate the prompt payment of the compensation.
The appeal comes amid growing concerns over the need to protect the interests of communities and individuals whose lands are affected by mining-related activities.
Hon. Dr. Arhin’s call highlights the importance of transparency, accountability and fairness in engagements between mining companies and host communities, particularly regarding land acquisition and compensation.
He urged the Atlantic Lithium Company to take concrete steps to address the concerns of the affected landowners and restore their confidence in the compensation process.
