Ministry Of Defence Faces GHȼ3.7B Debt, Including GHȼ275M To Food Suppliers – Vice President

The Vice President of Ghana, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has disclosed that the Ministry of Defence is currently burdened with a debt of GHȼ3.7 billion, which includes GHȼ275 million owed to food suppliers.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed members of the Ghana Armed Forces Council on March 24, at the Ministry of Defence, Professor Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the significant financial challenges facing the ministry.

“The Ministry of Defence is currently carrying a debt of GHȼ3.7 billion, which includes GHȼ275 million owed to food suppliers,” she said.

“This debt covers various obligations, including payments for food supplies, equipment, repairs, and machinery.” she added.

Acknowledging the broader economic difficulties the country is experiencing, the Vice President reassured the public that she and the other council members would work collaboratively to ensure that the armed forces are properly equipped and able to effectively address Ghana’s security needs.

“We are fully committed to ensuring that, despite these challenges, the armed forces remain well-equipped and capable of securing the nation,” she assured. “We will work together to address these issues and ensure the armed forces are able to meet the country’s security challenges effectively.”
