Nii Nai Gogo Hails Kumasi Central Prison’s Maiden Inmates’ Fashion Runway as Transformational Milestone

Security consultant, correctional professional, and U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Nii Nai Gogo, has commended the Ghana Prisons Service for successfully organising the Maiden Inmates’ Runway Fashion Show at the Kumasi Central Prison in the Ashanti Region, describing the initiative as a bold, innovative, and transformational milestone in Ghana’s correctional landscape.
According to Mr. Gogo, the fashion runway transcends mere entertainment, reflecting a progressive correctional philosophy that deliberately balances security and discipline with rehabilitation, skills development, and positive self-expression. He noted that such initiatives signal a conscious shift from perceiving prisons solely as places of punishment to recognising them as institutions for reformation, empowerment, and human development.
Drawing on his extensive experience in security and correctional systems, Mr. Gogo emphasised that the exhibition underscored the importance of equipping inmates with practical vocational and creative skills while restoring dignity, self-confidence, and self-worth. He praised the organisers for creating an inclusive platform that enabled both male and female inmates to design, sew, and model their own garments, blending traditional Ghanaian textiles with contemporary fashion styles.
“These kinds of programmes help uncover hidden talents, build confidence, and give inmates a renewed sense of purpose,” he stated, adding that opportunities for self-expression and skill acquisition are essential components of effective rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.
Mr. Gogo further applauded the Think Prisons 360 Degrees initiative, together with the supporting fashion brands and industry professionals, for their collaboration and commitment to inmate development. He described such public-private partnerships as critical to strengthening rehabilitation programmes and ensuring that inmates exit correctional facilities with marketable skills capable of supporting lawful and sustainable livelihoods.
He concluded by calling on policymakers, security institutions, civil society organisations, and the private sector to support, deepen, and scale similar initiatives nationwide. According to him, sustained investment in rehabilitation, vocational training, and inmate welfare is fundamental to building safer communities and advancing a more inclusive and sustainable national development agenda.
