NLC Orders GAUA to Suspend Planned Industrial Action

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) to suspend its planned industrial action, amid allegations that the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has failed to comply with a previous directive from the Commission.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 25, the NLC acknowledged receipt of GAUA’s letter dated the same day and referred to its earlier directive issued on June 9. That directive instructed both GAUA and GTEC to engage in dialogue and report the outcomes to the Commission by July 9, 2025.
The Commission warned GAUA against any premature action, emphasizing that due process must be followed.
“The Union is therefore directed to refrain from any intended action per paragraph 5 of the Union’s letter under reference, since parties are scheduled to appear before the Commission on 9th July, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. for reporting,” the statement read.
In addition, the NLC ordered GTEC to formally respond to GAUA’s claims of non-compliance with the Commission’s directive.
“GTEC is hereby directed to formally respond to the issue of non-compliance on or before the close of work on Friday, 27th June, 2025. If the claim is inaccurate, GTEC is also expected to provide evidence of compliance,” the Commission added.
The NLC’s intervention comes as tensions rise between the two bodies, with GAUA threatening to embark on industrial action over unresolved concerns. The Commission’s directive aims to provide space for further engagement and a peaceful resolution.
