The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the government to provide urgent support for traders affected by the ongoing demolition exercise at the Kasoa Old Market.
The exercise, being carried out by the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly as part of a redevelopment project, has displaced hundreds of traders, leaving many in distress.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, April 8, the Awutu Senya East Constituency Secretary of the NPP, Michael Addy, said most of the affected traders depend on loans from microfinance institutions and banks, and risk defaulting due to the disruption of their businesses.
“Most of these petty traders have taken loans from microfinance and rural banks within the municipality. Every loan comes with interest, and if they are asked to go home, how will they service these loans?” he said.
He, therefore, appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and support the affected traders, particularly by helping to cushion their financial losses.
“We are calling on the President to step in and ensure that the capital of the displaced traders—about 800 of them—is supported to ease their burden and enable them to rebuild their businesses,” he added.
The NPP is also demanding that the Assembly halt the second phase of the demolition and engage the traders on clear resettlement plans.
The party further warned that it could take action against the project in the future if authorities fail to address the concerns raised.
