Ntim Fordjour Blames Mahama, NDC for ‘Desecration’ of Independence Square by Foreign Gay Couple

Member of Parliament for Assin South and former Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has blamed former President John Dramani Mahama and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he describes as a growing disregard for Ghana’s cultural values.

His comments follow the circulation of a viral video showing two alleged foreign gay men kissing and celebrating what appears to be a wedding ceremony at Ghana’s Independence Square, with the national flag prominently displayed in the background.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, June 26, Rev. Fordjour labeled the act a “desecration” of one of the nation’s most revered monuments.

“Under Mahama & NDC, foreign gay couple boldly desecrate our national monuments: kiss under Independence Square flaunting Ghana flag,” he wrote.

“They’re emboldened to defy the dignity and sanctity of our rich Ghanaian values right before our eyes.”

He attributed the incident to what he called the NDC’s “leniency” on LGBTQ+ issues, stating that such public acts go against Ghana’s moral foundation and cultural identity.

The MP further emphasized the urgency of passing the anti-LGBTQ+ bill currently before Parliament, reiterating his support for the legislation.

“We shall end this absurdity with the bill,” he added.

The video has triggered widespread public outcry on social media, reigniting discussions on Ghana’s position regarding LGBTQ+ rights and the sanctity of its national symbols.

Parliament has yet to take a final vote on the bill, which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ advocacy and related activities in the country.
