The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially announced the dismissal of Otto Addo as head coach of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars.
The decision follows Ghana’s disappointing performances in the March international window, where the team suffered defeats in both pre–World Cup friendly matches against Austria and Germany, raising concerns about the team’s progress and tactical direction ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a statement confirming the development, the Ghana FA said it had parted ways with the former coach with immediate effect.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately,” the statement read.
“The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.
The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”
End of Second Spell
Addo, who previously served as an assistant coach at German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, was appointed to lead the Black Stars during a transitional period aimed at rebuilding the national team and restoring competitiveness on the international stage.
His tenure, however, came under increasing scrutiny following inconsistent performances, with the recent heavy defeats in international friendlies intensifying pressure from supporters and football stakeholders.
Focus Shifts to World Cup Preparations
The coaching change represents another major shift in the Black Stars’ technical structure as Ghana intensifies preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The GFA is expected to announce interim arrangements or a new head coach in the coming weeks as efforts continue to stabilize the team and improve results ahead of upcoming competitive fixtures.
More details regarding the future technical direction of the national team are expected soon.
