The Joint Association of Port Transport Drivers (JAPTU) Ghana has called off its planned sit-down strike following an emergency meeting with the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA).

The strike, which was scheduled in protest against concerns over new regulatory measures, was suspended after both parties reached a consensus on key issues affecting port transport operators.

In an interview with Citi News on Monday, April 13, the Executive Secretary of JAPTU, Ibrahim Musah, stated that the government clarified that the planned registration exercise by the GSA is not targeted at individual drivers but rather at corporate transport entities.

He noted that this clarification addressed one of the major concerns raised by drivers ahead of the intended industrial action.

Following this assurance, JAPTU announced its decision to withdraw the strike in the interest of continued dialogue and engagement.

As part of the agreement, the Ghana Shippers’ Authority is expected to engage the Minister of Roads and Highways in further discussions with JAPTU on concerns surrounding the new axle load control regime.

JAPTU leadership expressed optimism that the ongoing engagements will lead to a more inclusive approach in implementing policies within the transport sector.

The development is expected to ease tensions within the port transport industry and ensure the smooth movement of goods while consultations continue.

“The leadership of JAPTU Ghana is happy to announce that we are calling off our intended sit-down strike after a very fruitful dialogue session with the leadership of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority.

“We want to also take this opportunity to commend the Chief Executive of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority and his team members for the swift manner in which they reacted to the concern that we brought up,” he said
