Presbyterian Minister Urges Ghanaians to Embrace Customs, Culture, and Traditions

The Minister-in-Charge of the Bethel Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Mankessim, Rev. Samuel Addico, has called on Ghanaians to uphold and cherish the country’s rich customs, culture, and traditions.
Speaking at the special Traditional Day event organised by the church, Rev. Addico emphasized that Ghanaian culture is a unique and vital part of the nation’s identity, and should not be overlooked or undervalued. He noted that embracing cultural values strengthens national unity and preserves societal morals.
“Our culture is what defines us as a people. Even Jesus Christ respected the culture and traditions of the Jewish people. We must do the same with our own heritage,” he stated.
The Traditional Day celebration saw members of the congregation donning traditional attire and showcasing various aspects of Ghanaian culture through music, dance, and storytelling. The event also aimed to highlight the importance of passing on cultural knowledge to younger generations.
Rev. Addico further stated that children are a heritage from God, entrusted into the care of parents and guardians, and that there would be an account for how they are raised. He urged parents, religious leaders, and educators to guide children not only spiritually but also culturally.
He expressed concern over the growing influence of social media on the youth and encouraged them to reject negative foreign lifestyles and instead embrace the values embedded in Ghanaian traditions.
A key highlight of the day was the celebration of Charlotte Afe Addo Otoo, a young preacher from the church’s Sunday School, who was recently recognized with an award for her dedication and outstanding performance. The event was also intended to boost the confidence of other children in the church and inspire them to develop spiritually and culturally.
Delivering a short sermon, Charlotte Afe Addo Otoo encouraged pastors, teachers, and parents to train children with the Word of God and instill in them values that align with both Christian teachings and Ghanaian customs.
Her father, Mr. Ebenezer Otoo, who also serves as the Coordinator of the Young People’s Guild at the church, praised his daughter for her achievement and urged parents to support and encourage their children to discover and nurture their talents.
The event concluded with cultural performances and a renewed commitment by the congregation to continue promoting Ghanaian heritage alongside Christian values.
