Residents Express Concern After Hit-and-Run Incident Leaves Woman Abandoned in Mankessim

Residents of Mankessim in the Central Region have expressed outrage and sorrow following a hit-and-run accident that left a woman dead and abandoned along the Mankessim–Cape Coast highway.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the victim, believed to be a 40-year-old woman with a mental health condition, was struck by an unidentified speeding vehicle near the Nananom Cemetery on Wednesday evening around 7:30 p.m.
Disturbingly, the woman was allegedly left at the accident scene without rescue efforts or timely medical attention. Residents say the sight of her body lying unattended throughout the night was both traumatic and unacceptable.
When NewsAfricaGhana’s news team followed up, the Assembly Member for the New Nkusukum Electoral Area, Hon. Ali Sorin, confirmed the incident. He explained that he had visited the scene on Thursday morning and was preparing to lodge an official complaint with the Mankessim Police Command to demand urgent action.
In the absence of emergency responders, personnel from the media reportedly cut weeds and tree branches to cover the body out of respect until authorities could intervene.
The incident has fueled public anger, with residents condemning the growing recklessness of drivers on the road and criticizing the inadequate emergency response systems in the municipality. Many are calling on the police, health services, and municipal authorities to step up road safety enforcement and establish more reliable systems for rapid response to accidents.
Community leaders have also urged government agencies to provide more support for vulnerable individuals, especially those with mental health conditions, who are often left exposed to dangers on the streets.
