Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, March 30, Kofi Adams explained that while the government plans to sponsor around 800 supporters, the high cost of participation has influenced the ministry’s approach to spending.

“A lot of people have come to the ministry looking for a feeding contract, but I told them we’re not doing that,” he revealed.

By declining to award feeding contracts, the Ministry seeks to avoid potential mismanagement or unnecessary expenditure, signalling a more transparent and accountable approach to organising the country’s World Cup campaign.

Beneficiaries will be responsible for their own visa fees and meals during the tournament, while the government will cover airfare, accommodation, and local transport. According to the Minister, the estimated cost per supporter is $9,250.

“The cost is quite high, so we’re thinking about not doing more than 800. The Supporters’ Union are many; we can’t take all. If we’re successful at sending [this number], the calculations we did, even at the group stage, will cost you about $9,250 per head. We’re paying for their air tickets, accommodation, and transport,” Mr Adams said.

He stressed that the move is intended to ensure responsible stewardship of public funds while still supporting fans who will represent Ghana at the global tournament.

The announcement comes as excitement builds for Ghana’s participation in the 2026 tournament, with the government preparing to facilitate travel and accommodation for selected supporters.
