The High Court in Nalerigu in the North East Region has issued an interim injunction restraining the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from conducting its planned polling station elections in the Bunkpurugu Constituency.
The order, granted on 8 May 2026, follows an ex parte application filed by Konlan Yenuyiab and 16 other applicants against the NPP and another respondent.
The applicants sought to halt the constituency’s polling station elections, which were scheduled to take place from 10 May to 15 May 2026.
Presiding Judge, Justice Samuel Bright Acquah, granted the injunction after considering affidavit evidence presented before the court and submissions by counsel for the applicants, Solomon Biitian Damtar.
In the ruling, the court held that the applicants had established that they are members of the NPP in good standing and therefore possessed the legal capacity to challenge the electoral process.
Justice Acquah further observed that documents presented before the court suggested possible breaches of the party’s internal regulations as well as concerns relating to the principles of natural justice.
The court noted that permitting the elections to proceed before the matter is fully determined could cause irreparable harm to the applicants and potentially render any subsequent judgment ineffective.
Consequently, the court restrained the NPP, its executives, agents, assigns, and any persons acting on its behalf from conducting the polling station elections in the Bunkpurugu Constituency pending further proceedings.
The interim injunction will remain in force for 10 days.
