The University for Development Studies (UDS) has clarified that its MPhil student, Mr. Prosper Kaba, has been wrongly identified in media and social media reports linking him to a recent robbery incident in Tamale.

According to the University, Mr. Kaba is not a suspect in the case but a victim of a serious misidentification that has resulted in reputational damage and emotional distress.

In a rejoinder issued by the Office of the Registrar, UDS said its attention had been drawn to several publications and online posts which circulated Mr. Kaba’s image in connection with the robbery case.

The University stated unequivocally that Mr. Kaba “is not a suspect or participant in the said criminal act, but rather a victim of the incident.”

It described Mr. Kaba, an MPhil student, as having been wrongly drawn into a distressing case of misrepresentation, adding that the circulation of his image alongside allegations of criminal involvement has caused him significant emotional and psychological harm.

It also noted that the image of Mr. Kaba, identified as the first person from the left in widely circulated photos, was wrongly associated with alleged perpetrators.

The images were of the alleged robbery suspects were first released to the media by the Police.

But the University further expressed concern that one of the actual suspects appeared to have been omitted in some reports, raising questions about the completeness and accuracy of the publications.

UDS is, therefore, calling on all media houses that carried the erroneous reports to immediately retract the publications, issue an unqualified apology to Mr. Kaba, and correct the narrative to reflect his status as a victim and not a suspect.

It also urged journalists to adhere strictly to standards of accuracy, fairness and responsibility, especially in cases with serious implications for individuals’ reputations.
