Tragedy in Sefwi Awaso: Four Children Killed by Lightning, One Injured

A devastating thunderstorm has claimed the lives of four children and left one injured at Sefwi Awaso in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday evening at the Awaso GBC Compound during a heavy downpour that swept across the area.

According to family members, the children were playing together in the rain when a powerful bolt of lightning struck, shocking the entire community. Parents said they only became aware of the tragedy after hearing a loud explosion and later learning their children had been hit by lightning.

The Awaso community has been left reeling in grief and disbelief.

Assembly Member for the Awaso Electoral Area, Kennedy Ayitey Wisdom, who visited the bereaved families, expressed his deepest condolences and called for heightened vigilance during stormy weather.

“This is a heartbreaking incident. I urge all parents and guardians to keep children indoors during thunderstorms and to avoid exposing them to open spaces or electrical installations during heavy rains,” he advised.

The surviving child is currently receiving treatment at a medical facility.

In the wake of the tragedy, community members have called on local authorities to provide support for the affected families and to roll out public education campaigns on thunderstorm safety to prevent similar incidents in the future.
