The Bongo District Assembly and the entire Upper East Region are in mourning following the passing of Mr Joseph Abaa Akaseke, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo.
Mr Akaseke reportedly died on Sunday evening, February 22, at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment after a short illness. Although the exact cause of death has not yet been officially disclosed, the news has cast a deep pall over the district and beyond.
The Bongo Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Tahiru Aberinga, confirmed the sad development to Graphic Online, describing the loss as devastating to both the party and the people of Bongo.
Residents, traditional leaders, party faithful, and colleagues have expressed profound grief, with many describing his passing as sudden and heartbreaking. Social media platforms have since been flooded with tributes celebrating his humility, accessibility, and unwavering commitment to public service.
Appointed in April 2025, Mr Akaseke received overwhelming endorsement during his confirmation by Assembly Members, securing 52 out of 54 valid votes — a decisive mandate widely seen as a strong vote of confidence in his leadership and vision for the district.
In his confirmation address, he pledged to champion inclusive and participatory governance, assuring constituents that Bongo would secure its fair share of national development resources. Throughout his tenure, he was noted for prioritising improved basic services and advocating increased infrastructural investment.
He worked closely with local authorities, opinion leaders, and national representatives to address pressing challenges in education, healthcare delivery, road infrastructure, and access to potable water.
His administration was particularly vocal about the need for expanded social interventions and sustainable development initiatives to improve livelihoods across rural communities.
Colleagues have described him as energetic, approachable, and deeply passionate about grassroots development. Many credit him with fostering unity within the Assembly and strengthening collaboration between the district administration and community stakeholders.
As the district awaits official funeral arrangements, messages of condolence continue to pour in from across the region and the country, reflecting the impact of a man many believe dedicated his life to the progress and welfare of the people of Bongo.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
