Veteran Journalist Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng Passes Away at 74

 

Distinguished journalist, media trainer, and former Chairman of the National Media Commission, Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, has passed away at the age of 74 after a prolonged illness.

He died on Monday, May 26, in London, where he had been receiving medical treatment since February. His death was confirmed by close friend and media expert, Professor Kwame Karikari.

Nana Gyan-Apenteng was a respected figure in Ghana’s media landscape. He was a former editor and columnist for The Mirror, and served as Deputy Editor of the London-based West Africa magazine during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Upon returning to Ghana in the 1990s, he worked with the Third World Network as Head of Communications and Editor of the organisation’s monthly magazine, Africa Agenda. He also served as a media trainer and communications consultant for various corporate and development organisations, including MTN, several UN agencies, the Media Foundation for West Africa, and STAR-Ghana.

An alumnus of Apam Secondary School, Nana Gyan-Apenteng also attended Okuapeman School and later graduated from the University of Ghana, Legon.

Beyond journalism, he held the traditional title of Apagyahene of Tafo Eti in the Eastern Region. He was a committed advocate for literature and served as President of the Ghana Association of Writers.

From 2013 to 2018, he chaired the National Media Commission, championing press freedom and ethical journalism.

He is survived by six children. The family will announce funeral and burial arrangements in due course.
