Work Resumes on Akyem Abenase “Death Trap” Bridge After Years of Neglect

Work has officially resumed on the Akyem Abenase concrete bridge in the Akyem Abenase, a structure originally constructed during the era of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah but left in a deteriorated state for years.

The bridge, which residents describe as a “death trap,” is reported to have claimed four lives due to its poor condition and lack of maintenance over time. Community members say repeated appeals for repairs went unanswered after the project was initially abandoned, allegedly due to funding challenges.

The Akyemansa District Assembly has since stepped in, awarding a new contract for the rehabilitation of the bridge, with work now actively underway to restore the structure and improve safety for commuters.

The District Chief Executive for Akyemansa, Linda Ahinkora, recently led an inspection of the project to assess progress on the ongoing works. She noted that the rehabilitation of the bridge was identified as a key priority upon assumption of office, given its importance to local transport and safety.

According to officials, the project had previously stalled after the original contractor reportedly left the site due to funding constraints. The district assembly has since re-awarded the contract to ensure completion.

Residents of Akyem Abenase have welcomed the resumption of work, expressing relief that steps are finally being taken to address what they describe as a long-standing safety hazard. They have also commended the district assembly and government for responding to their concerns.

The rehabilitation project is expected to restore safe passage across the bridge and reduce the risk faced by commuters who rely on the route daily.
