‘You’re Merely Seeking Public Sympathy’ – Ansa-Asare Criticizes Suspended Chief Justice

Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has sharply criticised suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo over her recent public comments regarding the process leading to her removal from office.

Commenting on her call for a public hearing, Ansa-Asare argued that matters of such constitutional significance should not be discussed in the public domain. Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, he described the Chief Justice’s address as an inappropriate attempt to gain public sympathy.

“Ghanaians wanted to support her to go through the process, and at the end, everyone would see whether it was fair and transparent. She’s gone more than halfway and is now claiming the process is skewed — yet she won’t resign? Now she’s saying, ‘I’ve reached a corner, a point of no return, so public, here I come,’” Ansa-Asare was quoted by citifmonline.com.

He further criticised Justice Torkornoo’s leadership of the judiciary, arguing that her current predicament reflects a wider systemic failure she failed to confront during her tenure.

“What she’s telling the nation is that she was presiding over a broken justice system, and now, for the first time, she has become a victim of it. But if she is a victim of a failed system, then who caused it?” he asked.

Ansa-Asare noted that Justice Torkornoo has served as Chief Justice for three years, during which she should have recognised and taken steps to reform what he described as a “broken” justice delivery system.

“Now that she claims to be aggrieved and unfairly treated by this same system, her message to Ghanaians should be that the justice system is in crisis and requires urgent reforms,” he added.

His remarks come in response to Chief Justice Torkornoo’s first public statement since a petition was filed seeking her removal from office. In the statement, she raised concerns about alleged breaches of the constitution and procedural irregularities in the impeachment process under Article 146.
