An Open Letter to the National Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

Subject: Rethinking the Order of Party Elections for the Sake of Unity, Fairness, and Strategic Recovery

The National Executive Committee
New Patriotic Party (NPP)
Head Office
Accra

Dear Chairman and Honourable Members of the Committee,

I hope this message reaches you in good spirit and health.

I write as a committed member of our great party, deeply concerned about the direction we are taking as we prepare for election 2028 and beyond. As someone who has served on the NPP Communications Team, I feel a responsibility to speak up, not to criticise but to contribute to the strengthening of our party.

Reports indicate that the party is considering holding the presidential primaries before the internal elections that would bring in new national, regional, constituency, area and polling station executives. With all due respect, I believe this decision requires a second look.

Our loss in 2024 elections, should push us to reflect deeply not just on electoral strategy, but on how we organise ourselves from within. One clear lesson is that internal cohesion matters. The party must be united and well aligned before we select a new flagbearer. If we ignore this and move ahead with the presidential primaries first, we risk widening existing cracks and creating new ones.

Let’s consider the implications, what happens if the newly elected executives, brought in after the flagbearer is chosen, feel no connection to the candidate? Will they be fully committed to leading the campaign? Will they feel represented? We’ve seen this disconnect before, and we cannot afford it again not when our goal is to win back the confidence of the Ghanaian people.

There is also the question of ownership. Our grassroots members from polling station executives to national leaders must feel that they are part of the rebuilding process. If we bypass them in the order of elections, we weaken the very foundation we claim to value. The strength of the NPP has always come from the bottom up. That is how we have built enduring support and loyalty over the years.

If the intent behind reversing the order of elections is to avoid the usual tensions that follow the presidential primaries, then let’s address that concern by starting our internal elections earlier, not by rearranging the natural structure of leadership succession. It makes more sense to elect new executives first people who will be trusted and mandated by the base and then allow them to lead the process of selecting the party’s next presidential candidate.

There is also the issue of fairness. Outgoing executives, no matter how well-meaning, should not be allowed to pick a flagbearer on behalf of leaders who haven’t yet been elected. That does not reflect the democratic spirit we claim to uphold. If we truly have the party at heart as we often say then we must protect the integrity of our processes, not just the outcomes.

We are at a defining moment. Rushing the recovery process would be a costly mistake. Let’s not simply patch things up we must rebuild from the ground up, with patience, clarity, and unity.

I submit these thoughts respectfully, in the hope that they contribute to a broader reflection within the party. I remain committed to the NPP’s future and believe that, with the right choices, we can emerge from this period stronger, wiser, and more united.

Thank you for your time and your continued service to the party.

Yours sincerely,
Nana Yaw Agyenim-Boateng, PhD
